Almost every acoustic piano worth owning in Kenya is a used one. A well-built upright from thirty years ago will outplay anything new at the same money — but only if somebody competent has been inside it first. That is the part we do.

What we do before a used piano goes on the floor

  • Open it and assess the structure. Soundboard, bridges, pinblock and frame. If the bones are wrong, we do not buy the piano — that is the decision that protects you.
  • Check the tuning pins hold. A piano that will not stay in tune is a piano you will resent. Loose pins are expensive and we would rather find them than you.
  • Regulate the action. Hammer travel, key dip, let-off and repetition — the difference between an instrument that responds and one that fights.
  • Reshape or replace hammers, and voice them. This is where a dull, tired piano becomes one worth practising on.
  • Tune it, then tune it again after it has settled at pitch.

What to check on any used piano, wherever you buy it

  • Play every note, quietly and loudly. Silent notes, buzzing and notes that will not repeat are all action problems, and they are all work.
  • Look inside at the soundboard. A crack is not automatically fatal, but a separated rib is a serious matter.
  • Ask when it was last tuned, and to what pitch. A piano sitting a semitone flat for a decade needs more than a tuning.
  • Look at the strings and pins for rust — the usual sign of a piano that has lived somewhere damp.
  • Get the serial number and find out how old it really is. We publish ours on every listing.
